School choir
In November our school choir entered the Lyric FM “Choirs For Christmas Competition” and were delighted to be selected as national finalists, and then as overall winners.
The school choir is made up of fourth, fifth, and sixth class students from the vibrant communities of Southhill, Janesboro, Weston and surrounding areas. It operates on an inclusive policy - no auditions, just a space for every child willing to lend their voice.
Led by the passionate and dedicated trio – James Malone, Úna Ryan Carmody, and Orla Bourke Maguire with the assistance of many other school staff who are always willing to give up their time to help.
Their entry choice of "Angela's Song" by Darren Hendley and Dolores O’Riordan from the Limerick animated movie “Angela's Christmas” by Frank McCourt, held a special significance and commemorated the last recorded song of the legendary Dolores O'Riordan. It wasn’t just about the melody; it was a nod to the school's roots, symbolizing their hometown pride. Little did they anticipate that this choice would lead them to victory among tough competition.
On the last day before the Christmas break, the school decided to arrange something extra special to break the good news to the students. An assembly was organised to spread the festive cheer but little did the students know what was in store.
Kicking off the assembly, the school choir performed their rendition of 'Angela's Song,'. Unbeknownst to the students, members of Lyric FM were among the audience, ready to surprise them with the competition results, ahead of the official RTÉ announcement on Christmas Eve. The surprise reached its peak as Lyric FM announced that Our Lady Queen of Peace School had won the title of Best Primary School Choir. The students, caught off guard, erupted in cheers, overwhelmed with a mix of shock and pride. Lyric Fm had a second surprise up their sleeves as they proceeded to invite the school choir to perform with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra at the University Concert Hall in May to mark Lyric FM’s 25th anniversary.
It was a proud moment seeing the childrens' hard work pay off. Enormous gratitude is due to Anna Jane Ryan from the Limerick School of Music, teachers, SNAs, and even family members contributed to make this win a true community effort. The Limerick School of Music has an ongoing partnership with the primary school. This partnership strives to provide music education opportunities to children who might otherwise miss out, offering a bridge to a world of creativity and expression.
We had the privilege of meeting Damian O'Conner and Darren Hendley - the creator and songwriter of Angela's Christmas this year. They visited our school to meet the choir and chat to them about their work.
On May 1st the choir performed as part of the Lyric FM 25 year anniversary concert. 61 children sang accompanied by the RTE concert orchestra to a packed out hall in the University concert Hall. There was resounding applause and a standing ovation.
The choir's success this year is evidence of the resilience, talent, and community spirit in the area. Through their voices, these children are not only singing songs but proudly singing of the strength and beauty of their hometown. This win is more than a trophy; it’s a testament to the unity and spirit that is thriving today in the heart of Limerick city.
